This project involved multiple upgrades at Newark Penn Station.

As part of the design team, Malick & Scherer, P.C. provided:

  • Design Criteria information relevant to site and roadway design
  • Two (2) conceptual design alternatives for site and roadway improvements
  • High level plans of the preferred alternative for site and roadway improvements
  • An initial cost estimate based on the selected conceptual design

Restoring service to the Elwyn to Wawa commuter service regional rail line began in 2010 and involved upgrading existing track and stations as well as design and construction of new facilities. As part of the redesign of the 3.5 mile corridor, Malick & Scherer, P.C. was responsible for extensive Water Resource and Site/Civil design tasks, as well as Structural Design Support and Survey.

Water Resources Tasks:

  • Hydrological and hydraulic analysis of a mile of Chester Creek
    • Including 2 transit and 2 highway bridge structures
  • Bridge scour analysis

Structural Engineering Tasks:

  • Design of culvert headwalls and wingwalls
  • Structural design of 9 retaining walls to stabilize embankments
    • including soldier pile, tie-back, proprietary reinforced earth, and conventional cast-in-place concrete wall systems
